Hot water usage
Most people vastly underestimate the proportion of their energy bill that is attributed to providing hot water.
“I don’t use that much hot water” is a common statement (& misconception) we hear before we have carried out an energy assesment. Hot water is a year round requirement and the average hot water cylinder containing between 160L - 300L of water- all of which has to be heated to your desired temperature.
A good example is to think of your kettle – if you are making a cup of tea, do you:-
- A) Pour exactly one cup of water into the kettle and pour immediately after boiling or;
- B) Fill the kettle to the brim, wander off and do something else whilst it boils, return a few minutes later, flick the switch again to ensure it is freshly boiled….
B) uses much, much more energy than A) and the same applies to your hot water – even if you use zero hot water – you are still paying to heat and reheat the same water day after day.
It gets even more expensive in a family home where hot water consumption tends to be grouped together such as everyone showering at the start of the day or a bath before bedtime. If all the hot water is consumed, then normally, you switch the override button which provides fresh hot water within 10-15 minutes – this uses an immersion heater powered by electricity which is a very expensive way to heat your water.
